International Myotonic Dystrophy Awareness Day aims to increase understanding of myotonic dystrophy (DM), a rare inherited neuromuscular condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and myotonia (difficulty relaxing muscles). DM can also affect multiple body systems, including the heart, lungs, digestive system, endocrine system, and cognition.
This day provides an opportunity to raise awareness, recognise the experiences of those living with DM, and promote greater understanding, support, and research for individuals and families affected by the condition.
